Mario Kart 8 Deluxe adds custom items; Course Pack 3 is now available

The Booster Course Pack for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has seen two waves of eight DLC courses released for the game. $25 of DLC adds classic tracks from previous games (like the Wii’s Maple Treeway), some tracks from the mobile game Mario Kart Tour, and a third track pack is set to launch today (out of six in total).

However, there is also something else included in this update, that can be used both offline and in “certain” online modes. After installing the update, players will now be able to directly choose which items can and cannot appear in item tiles. You can view Nintendo Europe’s tweet revealing this feature below.

This feature will also apply to Team Races, allowing you to customize items for use by one team, the other, or not at all. It’s pretty clear that this could lead to utter chaos in multiplayer matches in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, where you could theoretically have a match of Blue Shells just for the sake of playing sports for example.

Oddly enough, when you look at the Item Box listing, you can see two empty slots, as if there were supposed to be other items. This is just a guess at the moment, but it will be interesting to see more items added to the game; People have been using this same list of items for eight years at this point. Item box selection update is free; You don’t need to purchase the $25 DLC to access it.
