Square Enix has been up and running in 2022 when it comes to quantity and quality, and 2023 looks great, too, as the Japanese publisher is set to release several high-profile titles, starting with Forspoken, an open-world RPG developed by Luminous Productions (the team that created stands behind Final Fantasy XV). Setting, genre, mechanics

Forbesken stars Fry Holland (played by Ella Balinska, who starred in the short-lived Resident Evil Netflix TV show), a 20-year-old woman with a kind heart and intelligent, if somewhat immature. Having experienced a difficult upbringing through the foster care system, she is distrustful of the world around her, using sarcasm and humor as a defense against a perceived hostile world. However, her life suddenly changes the day she is transported from her hometown of New York City to the magical and mysterious world of Athena.

Athens was once a peaceful land until a plague epidemic widely known as The Break suddenly spread across the world, causing humans and animals to turn into monsters. The Break corrupts even Earth itself, except for the sanctuary city of Cipal. However, Fry is mysteriously immune to the plague and also gains incredibly powerful magical abilities when she finds the sentient bracelet Cuff (voiced by Jonathan Cake). At first, Fry just wants to go home, but eventually the people of Athena convince her to use her unique powers to rid the land of all evil.

The break was also spoiled by the rulers of Athens, the tantas, beloved and powerful witches. who each embody a different virtue and have unique strengths. So far, Square Enix has shared information about Tanta Sila (voiced by Janina Gavankar, already seen as Iden Versio in Star Wars: Battlefront II), the most powerful of all the Tantas and former commander of the Athenian army, and Tanta Prav (voiced by Pollyanna McIntosh, already seen as a Shelob in Middle-earth: Shadow of War), is known as the wisest of the group before the Corruption.

The lore and story of Forsboken was penned by a fairly well-known team of writers, such as Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Todd Stashwick (12 Monkeys), Allison Rimmer (Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments), Amy Berg (Jack Ryan, Warrior Nun), Ann Toole (Horizon: Zero Dawn, Horizon: Forbidden West, Days Gun), and Amy Heng (Legacy of Kane: Soul River, Uncharted). The music was composed by Bear McCreary (Call of Duty: Vanguard, God of War Ragnarök) and Garry Schyman (BioShock, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor).

Luminous Productions, of course, handles the gameplay. Since it’s the same studio behind Final Fantasy XV, Forspoken shares some similarities with that game, starting with its open world mode. Athia is a large world, and players can explore the full extent of the map using Frey’s special magical parkour abilities, which allow her to accelerate the speed of traversing mountains, climbing mountains, and so on. Since it’s now mandatory for open world games, Forspoken will feature lots of different points of interest scattered across the map, as well as main and optional story missions. According to the developer, it takes about 30 hours to complete the main story, though players will still want to complete the side content, as optional missions will take them to areas not explored during the main story.

Besides magic parkour, another feature that sets Forspoken apart from other open world games is its combat system. Frey can use different types of magic to defeat enemies. Alternating long-range and short-range spells will be extremely important, as enemies are weak against certain types. With a wide range of offensive and support spells (reportedly over 100 in all), combat in Forspoken promises to be very diverse and certainly has the potential to stay fresh for a long time. The game also rewards players for performing well in battle, similar to the Devil May Cry series and other action games, prompting users to perform as best they can during battles.

demo to play

PlayStation 5 owners don’t have to wait until the game’s release date to find out what Forspoken is all about, as the playable demo is now available for download from the PlayStation Store in all regions. The demo, unlike some others, does not allow players to continue their progress on the full version of the game. It’s not even cut from the actual game, so the area available in the demo was handcrafted separately for this. However, it’s still a good way to get a feel for the game’s unique mechanics before you launch it.

There is no information about the availability of the demo for PC.

computer system requirements

Forspoken official system requirements for PC are yet to be revealed. The game has the distinction of being the first title to officially support Microsoft’s DirectStorage technology, so an NVMe SSD will likely be among the recommended requirements.
