AMD Radeon RX 7900 ’22 .12.2′ drivers to improve video playback power usage among other fixes

Yesterday, AMD released the latest Radeon Software Adrenalin (22.12.2) WHQL drivers for the Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 drivers carry fixes for higher power draw usage and other bugs

During launch, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards were seen sipping much higher power draw than competitors at idle and during normal video playback. Power draw was at times 4 times higher than NVIDIA’s RTX 40 series graphics card in multi-monitor and video playback.

Also, despite AMD claiming to offer a 54% improvement in power efficiency over RDNA 2, the Radeon RX 7900 graphics cards based on RDNA 3 haven’t even come close to that figure. But with the release of the new driver, AMD is addressing some of these issues and promises to deliver more efficiency improvements in the future. Here are the changelog and download links for the AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 22.12.2 WHQL drivers:

Fixed AMD Radeon 22.12.2 driver issues

  • Corruption may occur when using Virtual Super Resolution with multiple monitor configurations.
  • System crashes can be observed when changing display modes with 4 display configurations.
  • While loading Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the application may crash or the driver may time out after enabling the ray tracing settings.
  • Improvements to power usage during hardware accelerated video playback. More energy efficiency improvements are planned for future releases.

Known problems

  • The apparent high idle power is observed when using high resolution displays with a high refresh rate.
  • Intermittent application crashes or driver timeouts may occur when using Radeon Super Resolution with some extended display configurations.
  • Video stuttering or performance drops can be noticed during gameplay as well as video playback with some extended display configurations.
  • Stuttering can be seen in UNCHARTED 4: A Thief’s End during the game’s opening sequence.
  • While playing Valheim, the application may crash or the driver may time out using the Vulkan® API. Any user who may encounter these issues should select DirectX® API as a temporary solution.
  • Some VR games or applications may experience lower than expected performance.
