Monolith Soft is best known for the Xenosaga and Xenoblade Chronicles games, but in the early 2000s they teamed up with developer Tri-Crescendo on Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, a Gamecube-exclusive RPG featuring a unique card-based combat system. The game wasn’t a huge seller, but it did become a bit of a favorite in the decades since its release. However, with Xenoblade and working support for other Nintendo games now eating up Monolith Soft’s time, many didn’t expect to see Baten Kaitos again.
Well, about that… According to an eXtas1s insider writing for eXputer, a remake of the movie Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean is in the works. Apparently, this new version of the game is a collaboration between Monolith Soft and Bandai Namco, with Nintendo also sharing some of the capabilities. According to our insiders, he’s seen some kind of visual evidence of the remake’s existence, though he’s not clear on how radically the game’s revamp will be.
The original Baten Kaitos featured pre-made lush backgrounds, a technique that has become largely out of fashion in the years since. Will the new Baten Kaitos try to completely remake the game in 3D? Or is it perhaps more of a remaster that delivers a high definition version of an already nice looking game?
Of course, take all of this with a grain of salt until something is officially announced. Accurate information about Microsoft and Activision projects has come from eXtas1s in the past, but he doesn’t have much history with Nintendo.
According to rumors, the new version of Baten Kaitos is set to be released this summer and will likely be revealed sometime around E3. what do you think? Any old Batten Kaitos fans out there? Are you interested in playing a modern game?
