2024 Apple Watch Ultra to switch to micro-LED, along with a larger display

The Apple Watch Ultra was already too bulky for some users according to a previous review report, but that didn’t stop the tech giant from bringing a larger variant into the mix. According to an analyst, the larger screen will also adopt superior new technology.

The updated micro-LED technology of the Apple Watch Ultra will bring many benefits, but the production cost is very high

The first Apple Watch Ultra launched in September 2022 at a price of $799 with a 1.92-inch OLED screen, and its successor is said to arrive next year, coming in at 2.1 inches, according to Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Bo. His research note spotted by MacRumors states that the display will tout micro-LED technology, which is a noticeable upgrade over the current generation of OLED touted by the newly launched Apple Watch Ultra.

Increasing the screen size to 2.1 inches might be seen as a burden to the wearer, but it also brings a wide range of lurking benefits to the table. For example, a bigger screen means a bigger battery, resulting in more “screen on time,” as well as more screen space for the user to enjoy. In addition, the change in physical dimensions means that Apple will have enough space to integrate more sensors, an area the company has not worked on in any Apple Watch model launched this year.

Compared to OLED, micro-LED allows for increased brightness, along with improved energy efficiency, but the trade-off is higher manufacturing cost, which is why Apple hasn’t yet adopted it in other products. In his research note, Pu did mention that if the 2024 Apple Watch Ultra converts to micro-LED, what is the expected retail price? Given the oversupply and new technology, Apple may have to increase the $799 threshold, and that could affect overall sales.
