We’ve previously reported on how High On Life looked like heading to the top of Steam’s sales charts and Game Pass’s most played charts. Yesterday, though, the news became official with a celebratory post on the Xbox Wire blog. High On Life broke records for largest Game Pass launch ever, largest third-party Game Pass launch ever, and largest Game Pass launch in 2022.
Matt Pearcy, general manager of content planning at Xbox, said in a statement:
High On Life is an incredibly unique title that we’ve been excited about for a long time. It’s great to see so many Game Pass members jumping into it at launch to try out Squanch’s story for themselves before the holidays.
Mike Fridley, Studio Director and COO of Squanch Games added:
This was our first time launching a game with Game Pass and we were blown away by the reaction of the players who made us the most popular game on Game Pass right now. When Squanch Games was first created, the goal was to make the games we wanted to play — and Game Pass helps us reach gamers who want to play those games, too.
California-based game developer Squanch Games has only been around for six years, yet they’ve already released three games, each bigger than the last. The first title, Accounting, was a virtual reality exploration game. The second, Trover Saves the Universe, was an action platformer. High On Life, a first-person shooter with action/adventure and Metroidvania elements, is by far their most complex project. He stands out mostly thanks to his comical tone, which is a big Squanch Games trademark. The studio was founded, after all, by Rick and Morty co-creator and voice actor, Justin Roiland.
