Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Alpha Training

The world of Warhammer 40,000 is ready for storytelling, and many video game developers have taken advantage of the rich setting that Games Workshop has created for their popular board game to create some great titles. Surprisingly, there haven’t been many RPGs based on the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and the ones that have been released don’t seem to delve into the lore of the colossal universe. However, that is set to change in the future, as Owlcat Games, the studio behind Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, is working on one that will combine Warhammer 40,000’s vast lore with superb writing and storytelling in The studio is known for.

While Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is a long way from release, Owlcat Games is offering players a chance to try out the game via the Digital Pack and check for themselves if the studio is ready for such a huge undertaking. Having tried the alpha myself, I’d say it sure does, even though this early version of the game isn’t quite as accessible.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader stars a player-created Rogue Trader who travels to the Koronus Expanse, a region of unexplored space on the edge of the Imperium of Man, to do what a Rogue Trader usually does: expand the borders of the Imperium. At the beginning of the initial release, players can choose from a few specific backgrounds that define the Rogue Trader’s set of stats and skills. After creating Rogue Trader, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader throws players directly into the action at the start of Act 2. Right from the start, it’s clear how Owlcat Games goes all-in when it comes to setting and story. Those with limited knowledge of the Warhammer 40,000 universe may feel confused by the barrage of jargon thrown at them from the start of the adventure, but those who live and breathe Warhammer 40,000 will certainly be pleased to see such an accurate representation of the universe. Even though the game is still in alpha, the game does a pretty good job of providing information about important terms and concepts, information readily available by hovering over certain terms with your mouse cursor in true cRPG fashion. Obviously, choices will play a very big role in the game, and while those in alpha have minor consequences, they make the player feel like an active part of the world.

Unsurprisingly, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader alpha doesn’t do a great job of introducing newcomers to its ground-based combat system, as it doesn’t provide much information about its mechanics and the many skills the characters have at their disposal. However, it is undoubtedly a very solid turn-based combat system that combines some of the best elements of similar systems seen in other games with some interesting new mechanics. While the cover system has been seen in a lot of other games, the division between Action Point, Movement Point, and Momentum system is something new that sets Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader apart from the rest. The Momentum system is particularly interesting, as it not only allows the various unit types available in Alpha to use the huge number of skills listed above, but also allows players to unlock their ultimate special ability, Heroic Deeds, only available with high Momentum levels and Desperate Meters. , only available at low momentum. The latter is particularly interesting, as Desperate Measures’ abilities also come with some drawbacks that make using them risky.

Turn-based tactical ground combat is half of the Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader combat experience, as the game also features space combat, which makes a lot of sense given the setting and premise of space exploration. Fighting enemies in space requires players to properly maneuver their ship so that they can use the many weapons available, make use of empty ship shields, and even directly control torpedoes. Abilities are also available during space battles, and change depending on which officers are on board, so good preparation is just as important as momentary tactical decisions.

Space combat isn’t the only mechanic that makes Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader feel like a proper role-playing game Warhammer 40,000, as Rogue Trader can explore space, take control of space colonies, or restore lost ones to enemies. These colonies have different development levels and provide the resources needed to start new projects or complete specific orders. While these features may change significantly later on, as confirmed by Owlcat Games, they do show how the developer is definitely using the Warhammer 40,000 setting in the best possible way.

While still in an early stage of development, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader shows great potential. Creating a compelling and unique role-playing game in the world created by Games Workshop is not an easy feat to achieve, but Owlcat Games has already proven itself to be up to the challenge. If the game feels good to play at this point, it will be very interesting to see how good the game will be when its final version is released in the future.
