Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the second entry in the series developed by Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts, will be darker, but it won’t be grim for the sake of being grim, as the game tries to balance different elements in the story.
talk with Entertainment Weekly Following the game’s official reveal at The Game Awards 2022, actor Cameron Monaghan, who plays the main character Cal Kestis, commented on his character’s journey up to the start of the new game, saying that the story will be darker and more challenging than it was in the game. The original game, where it explores changes in Cal’s worldview and how he interacts with others after years of fighting in a desperate situation.
I wanted to see what it was like for Cal as he got older, and what a number of years of fighting in a desperate situation would look like for the character. How does that change his view of the world? How does that change the way he treats people? How does it influence his decision making? These were all questions that we started to ask as we were doing the first phase [game]and then being able to explore a more mature story with Cal – I would say it’s more challenging and darker.
Despite being darker, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor won’t be grim for the sake of being grim, Cameron Monaghan added, as the game will balance the original adventure feel with more challenging character moments. Cale will also ask some important questions that people will be surprised at.
But the thing that’s always been important to me is that you don’t want things to be bleak for the sake of being bleak. I think there’s a difference between something dark and something devoid of fun – still finding the adventure of the story is really important. But then also, balance that out with something more challenging and interesting for the character, who’s going to ask some really big questions that I think people are going to be surprised about. Hopefully we’ll be able to hit people with a few punches in the gut along the way.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor launches on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S on March 17, 2023. You can learn more about the next entry in the series by Respawn by checking out the game’s Steam Store page.
