Scalebound may be in the works again

Scalebound by PlatinumGames is probably one of the most famous games that got canceled before its release. Some of the unique features in the game have been used in other games from the studio, such as Astral Chain and Bayonetta 3, but it seems we haven’t heard the latest in the game yet.

Speaking during the latest episode of the XboxEra podcast, host Speshal_Nick, who has correctly disclosed information about Xbox games in the past, revealed that PlatinumGames is working with Microsoft again to bring Scalebound back. However, this new collaboration is still very early days, so it’s not clear if the game will pick up where it left off, or if it will be a complete overhaul.

PlatinumGames’ desire to eventually work again on Scalebound is no mystery, with studio head Atsushi Inaba stating back in 2020 and again last year that the studio would be open to working on the game if the opportunity presented itself again. Until recently, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, didn’t contact the Japanese studio, but things may have changed in the past few weeks.

PlatinumGames’ latest title, and one of those games that incorporate mechanics from Scalebound, is Bayonetta 3. Released on Nintendo Switch last year, it’s one of the best action games released in the past few years, as Nathan explained in his review.

Bayonetta 3 is the series’ best entry yet, delivering a universe-hopping story, dazzling cinematic moments, and uplifting action that’s more accessible and deeper than ever before. The game can feel a little cramped on the Switch, but Platinum hits every bit of performance potential from the hardware. Whether you and Bayonetta have a history or not, this is a post not to be missed.
