AMD offers more affordable options within the Ryzen 7000 AM5 Desktop CPU lineup with the Ryzen 9 7900, Ryzen 7 7700, and Ryzen 5 7600.
AMD Ryzen 7000 AM5 desktop CPUs just got more affordable: Ryzen 9 7900 for $429, Ryzen 7 7700 for $329, Ryzen 5 7600 for $229, hit retail Jan 10
Today, AMD introduced three new models in the new Ryzen 7000 Non-X Desktop CPU family, the Ryzen 9 7900 with 12 cores, the Ryzen 7 7700 with 8 cores, and the Ryzen 5 7600 with 6 cores. The three new models will feature a Zen 4 core architecture with a TDP of 65W that’s significantly lower than the “X” parts, all while retaining the same core configurations and Zen 4 core architecture. The specifications of each CPU are listed below.
AMD Ryzen 9 7900 – 12 Zen 4 Cores for only $429
The AMD Ryzen 9 7900 will have 12 cores, 24 threads, 76MB of cache (64MB L3 + 12MB L3) and will feature a maximum clock speed of 5.4GHz. The CPU will retail for $429, a difference of $120 over the Ryzen 9 7900X. While the base clock remains to be seen, the boost clock sees a 200MHz drop, but given the price point this 12-core chip looks amazing and I can already see a lot of users upgrading to the $500 Zen 12-Core . 4 slices. AMD will position the chip against the Intel Core i9-13900 and Core i9-12900 CPUs.

AMD Ryzen 7 7700 – 8 Core Gaming Champ for under $350
Next we have the Ryzen 7 7700 which will have 8 cores, 16 threads, 40MB of cache (32MB L3 + 8MB L3), and will feature a maximum clock speed of 5.3GHz. The CPU will retail for $329, a difference of $70 versus the Ryzen 7 7700X that retails for $399. The Ryzen 7 7700 seems to be clocked at just 100MHz lower than the Ryzen 7 7700X which is pretty impressive given its 65W power budget. Final TDP should come down around 90-100W due to the 1.375x multiplier for PPT. The Ryzen 7 7700 will be pitted against the Core i7-13700 and Core i7-12700.

AMD Ryzen 5 7600 – Making AM5 affordable for entry-level builders
Finally, we have the AMD Ryzen 5 7600 which will have 6 cores, 12 threads, 38MB of cache (32MB L3 + 6MB L2) and will have a maximum clock speed of 5.1GHz. The CPU will retail at $229, which is also $70 less than the Ryzen 5 7600X which retails for $299. The boost clock is 200MHz lower than the “X” chip. The Ryzen 5 7600 will be pitted against Core i5-13600 and Core i5-12600 CPUs.

Based on the above:
- Ryzen 9 7900 12 Core – $120 cheaper vs. 7900X
- Ryzen 7 7700 8 Core – $70 cheaper for the 7700X
- Ryzen 5 7600 6 Core – $70 cheaper for the 7600X
However, buyers should be aware that the new Ryzen 9 7900 vs. the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X performs, on average, 119% better in twelve tested games at 1080p. For the following comparisons, the Ryzen 9 7900 system is equipped with DDR5-6000 memory and the Ryzen 9 5900X is equipped with DDR4-3600 memory. You can also check Geekbench 5 performance for the mentioned CPUs here.
One of the things AMD is marketing with these chips is that they will be bundled with either a Wraith Prism cooler (Ryzen 9 7900 / Ryzen 7 7700) or a Wraith Stealth (Ryzen 5 7600) CPU cooler. Intel will also now bundle 13th Gen Non-K CPUs with all new Laminar series coolers based on the TDP spec so both chip makers will have a little added value for average users but we still suggest users get aftermarket cooling options If they have the budget to make the most of the CPU.
Overall, the chips look like they will offer the best performance per dollar on the AM5 platform and we’ll also be looking at cheaper A620 motherboards by mid-2023.
