PAYDAY 2023 will be released in 2023, the publisher confirms

PAYDAY 3 will be released in 2023, publisher Prime Matter has confirmed.

The news was announced yesterday via a short pre-alpha video from developer Overkill Software. We’ve included pre-alpha in-game screenshots below:

PAYDAY 3 is the long-awaited sequel to 2013’s PAYDAY 2. The game will use Unreal Engine with development starting in 2019. At this point, it is not certain if the team is using either Unreal Engine 4 or Unreal Engine 5.

PAYDAY 3 was developed by Overkill Software en Starbreeze Studios, for PC and console release. Koch Media is publishing the title under Prime Matter.

Tobias Sjögren, Starbreeze’s acting CEO, said last year. “In addition to securing continued development, this transaction guarantees the global publication of PAYDAY 3 as well as marketing efforts throughout the game’s entire lifecycle. We now have a strong foundation for a successful launch of PAYDAY 3.”

We’ve included some of the key features of the game, as shared last year, below:

  • The sequel will be set in The Big Apple: New York City. The game takes place in a vivid and massive representation of the city. A game-changing factor: The media is now covering the gang, and their exploits…and who knows what might come of that…
  • PAYDAY 3 is set several years after the events of PAYDAY 2, where the gang has retired from their life of crime and headed off into the sunset. Meanwhile, the world of PAYDAY has transitioned into the digital age, as software giants, cryptocurrency, mass surveillance, and the dark web play into new tools, challenges, and opportunities for the gang.
  • The four original characters – Dallas, Hoxton, Chains and Wolf – return to a life of crime in PAYDAY 3.
