Marvel’s Avengers didn’t live up to expectations, but developer Crystal Dynamics has continued to update the game, adding Jane Foster’s version of Thor and the Winter Soldier, along with the long-awaited Cloning Lab in 2022. Ross, the party is finally over in 2023 with No new content planned for 2024 or later.
However, according to Ross, there may still be a fair amount to look forward to in 2023. Data experts dug deeper in the latest update and discovered voice lines referring to the likes of Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, Ironheart, and the new Black Panther movie, Shuri. There’s no guarantee any of these characters will be added to the game, Ross says the situation is still evolving, but at least in the case of She-Hulk and Captain Marvel, the characters have been in the works for a while.
As for why Marvel’s Avengers has struggled so much to provide a decent stream of live-action content, Ross says one crucial issue is the outdated and inefficient Crystal Dynamics engine, which many new hires struggle to work with. A lot of work had to be put into post-launch content at Square Enix Montreal (now defunct) and even then, a late night and crunch was required. As a result, a lot of people have left Crystal Dynamics or moved on to other teams, like those making the next Tomb Raider game or helping Microsoft’s Dark Night resurrection.
Of course, take all of this with a grain of salt, but then again, Ross’ word when it comes to the Avengers is pretty reliable. Honestly, it’s kind of surprising that Avengers is still going at this point, so the game finally calling it quits in 2023 isn’t that shocking.
Marvel’s Avengers can be played on PC, Xbox One platform, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PS5.
