Intel splits AXG in two, Raja Koduri takes over as Chief Engineer again

Intel today announced that Raja Koduri will (again) take over as the lead architects at Intel and take care of not just the GPU side, but the CPU and AI arms as well. Its job description can be described as expanded to take care of the overall coherence and convergence of CPU, GPU, and AI architectures.

Restructuring at Intel: Arc Graphics will now be part of the Client Computing Group as Raja Koduri becomes Chief Engineer again

Raja recently announced on Twitter that he’s going through widespread health issues, so the move seems designed to reduce the amount of immediate engineering burden on him while he goes through his post-surgery recovery. Knowing full well what our audience will be asking given recent rumors, Intel has confirmed that this is just a restructuring and will remain fully committed to Battlemage and Celestial with Raja remaining responsible for the overall direction and roadmap for the architectures.

We managed to get the following quotation from the company:

Discrete graphics and fast computing are critical growth drivers for Intel. As our main products are now in production, we are developing our structure to accelerate and expand their impact and drive market entry strategies with a unified voice for customers. This includes our Consumer Graphics teams joining the Customer Computing group, and our Agile Computing teams joining the Data Center and AI group.

In addition, Raja Koduri will return to the role of Chief Architect at Intel to focus on our incremental efforts across CPU, GPU, AI, and high-priority technical software acceleration.

Moreover, Intel is also restructuring the former AXG group by dividing it into two parts. While the term AXG was previously used to loosely define the entire team leading Raja, it will now only be used to describe the supercomputing business with teams led by Jeff McPhee, Masuma Bhaiwala, Vineet Joel, Jason Gunderson, Anton Kaplanian, Tahir Madraswala, Murali Ramadoss and Brijesh Tripathi. The new AXG will transition to be part of the Datacenter and AI (DCAI) group. The group will be led by Jeff McPhee, who will report to Sandra Rivera while they conduct a search for a permanent leader at AXG.

Meanwhile, the Arc Graphics side of things will be joined by the Customer Computing group under the leadership of Lisa Pearce who will report to Michelle Johnston Holthouse. This is, of course, the group that gamers are most interested in and will be the group to keep track of for Battlemage and Celestial GPUs. As mentioned earlier, Intel has reiterated that nothing has changed in terms of the GPU roadmap and it is likely that this restructuring is only designed to reduce Raja Koduri’s workload.
