How to use your phone as a microphone

Whether you want to chat with friends or have a family meeting, you can use the microphone to improve communication. But what to do if you don’t have one? Of course you use a smartphone.

Let’s discuss how to set up your phone as a microphone on different platforms.

Using your phone as a microphone with Discord

The easiest way to use your smartphone as a microphone on Discord is to install a third-party app. The WO Mic is one of your best options. This program is compatible with Bluetooth, USB and Wi-Fi connections, allowing you to set up your device through multiple networks.

Here’s what you need to do to configure the WO Mic:

1. Go to your browser and visit this website.
   
2. Download the client to your computer. Your version should contain all necessary drivers.
   
3. Depending on your device, download and install the iOS or Android app.
   
4. Run the program on your PC. If you get a “Missing DLL” message, install the VC Redistributable Package from Microsoft.
   
5. Go to “Connections” and press “Connect”.
   
6. Select your “Transport Type”. We’ll use Bluetooth as an example.
   
7. Open “Settings” on your computer and go to “Devices” and then “Bluetooth and other devices”. Turn on Bluetooth to make your computer discoverable to other devices.
   
8. Launch “Settings” on your smartphone and enter the “Connections” menu. Wording may vary. Turn on Bluetooth and pair your smartphone with your computer. You should see a notification confirming the link.
   
9. Go back to WO Mic on your desktop and go to “Bluetooth” under “Transport Type”. Select your phone and click the “Connect” button.
   
10. Go to the smartphone app and press “Settings”, “Transport” and “Bluetooth”. Join a Discord meeting and press the “Play” symbol on the WO Mic smartphone to transmit your voice.
    

Alternatively, you can use a USB connection. It’s just as simple, but it only works on Android devices.

1. Connect your computer to your phone using a USB cable.
   
2. If prompted, install the necessary drivers.
3. Enable developer mode on your phone and enable USB debugging.
   
4. Open WO Mic on your computer and go to “Transport Type” and then “USB”.
   
5. Press the “Connected” button and open “Settings” in the Android version of the app.
   
6. Click on “Transport” and select “USB”.
   
7. Join a Discord session, go back to Wo Mic on your smartphone and tap “Play” to activate the microphone.
   

Use your phone as a zoom microphone

Zoom is a platform that allows you to use your smartphone as a microphone. You can do so from a Windows or Mac computer.

1. Log in to your Zoom client.
   
2. Join or start a meeting.
   
3. Press the “Connect Audio” button. If you’re already in a meeting, click the prompt to switch to phone audio.
   
4. Select “Call me”.
   
5. Select the appropriate country code.
   
6. Enter your number and press “Call me”.
   

If you’re using Zoom directly from your Android or iOS smartphone, follow these steps:

1. Open Zoom and sign in with your credentials.
   
2. Join or start a meeting.
   
3. Press the “Connect Audio” button. If you’re in a meeting with computer audio, tap “More,” then “Mute.”
   
4. Click the “Connect Audio” tab again and select “Connect by Phone”.
   
5. Select the menu at the top of the screen.
6. Select the region or country of your phone number.
7. Press the phone symbol next to the number to dial.

You can also set your phone as a microphone using Wi-Fi and the WO Mic app. Keep in mind that your computer and smartphone must use the same connection.

1. Press “Windows” and “I” to enter Settings.
   
2. Go to “Network and Internet” and then “Wi-Fi”.
   
3. Select “View available networks” and select one.
   
4. Tap “Connect”.
   
5. Open “Settings” on your WO Mic smartphone and press “Transport”.
   
6. Select “Wi-Fi”, return to the previous screen and press “Play”. You should now see a message at the top of the display. It should show a number, which is your IP address.
   
7. Launch WO Mic on your computer and select “Transport Type”.
   
8. Select “Wi-Fi” and go to the “IP Address” section.
   
9. Enter your IP address from the mobile app and press the “Connect” button. Your microphone should now be active, allowing you to join Zoom meetings with phone audio.
   

Alternatively, you can connect your computer and smartphone via Wi-Fi Direct. However, you will need to turn your smartphone into a hotspot and use carrier data. This should be a last resort as it can blow up your account.

1. Go to “Settings” on your smartphone.
   
2. Go to “Tethering” or “Connection” depending on your device.
   
3. Turn on the hotspot and allow others to connect if prompted.
   
4. Start your computer and open “Settings”.
   
5. Go to the “Network and Internet” tab, click on “Wi-Fi” and press “View available networks”.
   
6. Select your hotspot and select “Connect”.
   
7. Launch WO Mic on your phone, go to “Settings” and under “Transport” press “Wi-Fi Direct”.
   
8. Press the “Play” symbol to open Windows WO Mic.
   
9. Select “Wi-Fi Direct” as “Transport Type” and select “Connect”.
   
10. Use Zoom with a fully functional phone microphone

Use your phone as a microphone with Microsoft Teams

Teams also lets you use your smartphone as a microphone. The easiest way to configure the device is to use free software. In addition to WO Mic, you can also use EZ Mic.

The first step is to set up the application on your computer and phone.

1. Download EZ Mic for desktop from this site.
   
2. Install the app on your iPhone or Android smartphone.
   
3. Launch the app on both devices.

Now you will need to connect your smartphone.

1. Connect your computer and phone to the same Wi-Fi.
   
2. Open EZ Mic on your smartphone and press “Find”.
   
3. Wait for the application to discover your computer. Once it does, click on your computer name.
   
4. If prompted, allow the system to use your microphone.
5. The PC symbol should now turn green.
   

Finally, test if your microphone is working on your computer.

1. Go back to your computer and launch “Control Panel”.
   
2. Press “Hardware and Sound”.
   
3. Select the “Sound” tab and select “Manage audio devices.”
   
4. Go to “Recording” and double click on the EZ microphone.
   
5. Click on the “Listen” section and check the box next to “Listen to this device”.
   
6. Press the “Apply” button and you should now be able to hear the audio captured by your smartphone on your computer. This means that your device is working properly as an input microphone for your computer
   
7. Go to Microsoft Teams and start a meeting.

If you see any errors or delays, please check your connection. You can also open task manager and configure EZ Mic and related applications as high priority services.

If you decide to go with EZ Mic, consider upgrading to its premium version. Otherwise, the microphone disconnects every four to five minutes, which can be annoying.
