For four generations, Samsung has kept the same design for its flagship foldable flagship notch, with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 carrying minor aesthetic changes. One area that critics may have been annoyed with was seeing screen creases, and according to recent rumors, Samsung is aiming to reduce that by adopting what one tipster calls a ‘drop joint structure’ for the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
Currently, Samsung uses a design where the screen and ultra-thin glass form a narrow curve, resulting in a visible crease
Where Samsung has been using the same design approach for many years, its competitors like OPPO have switched to something different called a “Waterdrop” hinge. This change, according to 9to5Google, allows the screen to flex slightly in the hinge space, which results in a less noticeable crease. Keep in mind that the crease can still be noticed in different lighting conditions, but it’s not as prominent as what can be seen on the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
According to Ice Universe on Twitter, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will switch to this design, with Samsung internally calling this change the “dumbbell” hinge. Not only should this limit the crease from being seen, but the tipster says the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will also become water resistant. However, it did not mention the IP rating that Samsung intends to give its upcoming foldable flagship, but we will find out in the coming months.
Samsung Electronics is planning to implement the “droplet” hinge structure on the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Samsung internally calls it the “dumbbell” hinge. Finally the Waterdrop + Waterproof hinge has arrived.

What we also don’t know is whether this “hinged structure” will force Samsung to increase the price of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Given the case of foldable smartphones, this isn’t quite practical for consumers from an affordability standpoint, so hopefully, the upcoming phone provides leverage. less on the client’s wallet.
Samsung usually announces its high-end ‘Z’ series in August, so we’ll keep our readers posted until the official reveal begins. Until then, we’ll turn our attention to the impending Galaxy S23 launch.
