Samsung is said to be bringing a 200MP main camera sensor to the upcoming Galaxy S23 Ultra, which is a huge jump over the 108MP unit found on the Galaxy S22 Ultra. However, one of the tips reveals a detail that the individual differences in image size aren’t too different for the two cameras.
200MP photos from Galaxy S23 Ultra can take up to 40MB, depending on different conditions
Every photo captured from the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 200MP camera is said to have a resolution 12240 x 16320According to the details shared by Ice Universe. Although the tipster does not reveal where such results were encountered, it is interesting to note that the previous resolution hardly differs from the image captured by the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s 108MP camera.
For comparison purposes, the 108MP sensor can take a photo with a resolution of up to 9000 x 12000, while using about 14.21MB of space. The 200MP Galaxy S23 Ultra can take photos of different sizes. One image by Ice Universe shows a resolution of 12240 x 16320 but an image size of 20.98MB, while the second image was taken at exactly the same resolution but a size of 37.06MB.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 200MP photos aren’t very big. As far as I know, daily scene photos are only 20MP, 40MP, which isn’t much larger than 108MP. pic.twitter.com/6Ym7fDMsaY

As such, Tipster believes the image size will vary between 20MB to 40MB. We don’t know what compression techniques Samsung uses to drastically reduce the capacity of each 200MP image, but we sure hope that for the company’s sake, it doesn’t affect image quality.
There are diminishing returns in bringing higher resolution sensors to smartphones due to the smaller housing, forcing companies like Samsung to incorporate tiny sensors. Whether the Korean giant brings a 200MP sensor to the Galaxy S23 Ultra as a marketing stage or if the upcoming flagship could become the next photo-and-video giant, we don’t know.
