Apple plans AirPods Lite as an affordable alternative to undercut the competition

The largest market share in the True Wireless Stereo (TWS) segment in the third quarter of 2022 belongs to Apple, thanks to the many AirPods models available at different price points. Until then, a report suggests that a pair of AirPods Lite are set to provide a more affordable solution to the masses and bring in some heated competition.

Currently, Apple’s cheapest AirPods offering is the second-generation version, which retails for $129.

AirPods Lite rumors have been circulating for a couple of years now, with our latest report stating that a pair of wireless earbuds would arrive with coin-shaped batteries. Although the rumor fire was put out a while ago, analyst Jeff Bo of Haitong International Securities wants to ignite it and pour more gasoline, according to a research note seen by 9to5Mac. These will target the price-competitive market, Bo says, since the lowest-priced in-ear product Apple sells is the second-generation AirPods at $129.

Next up, we have the AirPods 3 at $169. Given these prices, we can assume that the AirPods Lite will launch for less than $129. However, second-generation AirPods often go for $99.99 and touch $79.99 in some rare cases, so it’s not clear what price Apple wants to target the AirPods Lite at, assuming they launch in the first place. Since Apple is a premium brand that provides quality goods, we don’t know what kind of features will be cut from this product when it officially arrives.

To lower the manufacturing cost, the least Apple could do is reuse the AirPods 3 design while phasing out the second generation AirPods. At under $129, the AirPods Lite cannot have features like active noise cancellation, spatial audio, MagSafe charging, or any IP rating. However, you should continue to use Apple’s customized H1 as we feel this has been the primary selling point for the entire line of products and allows for seamless pairing with your iPhone or iPad.

It’s also possible that Apple will cancel development of the AirPods Lite, as it may feel that the product lacks quality due to widespread cost cutting and doesn’t offer enough value. Anyway, if we hear more about these wireless earphones, we will inform our readers accordingly.
