Anatomy of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX’s vapor chamber, and insufficient fluid intake is a potential issue

The vapor chamber in AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card has finally been dissected by Der8auer trying to figure out overheating issues.

Anatomy of an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX vapor chamber, investigation points to low fluid levels as possible cause of overheating

Der8auer has been working ever so hard to uncover the root cause of overheating issues affecting Radeon RX 7900 XTX reference graphics cards. Since we first reported it, there are many possible findings from experts including Der8auer and Igor’s Lab. Multiple cases have now been reported and the problem is not something AMD can overlook and reject RMAs for.

Slicing through the vapor chamber on the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX reference model, the cooler shows no flaws in materials and design, and is actually very well built with a very large surface area to cover. Also, the vapor chamber had liquid in it even though the special RX 7900 XTX cards that were CNC-drilled by Der8auer were units affected by overheating issues.

It is therefore very likely that while there is certainly liquid within the steam chamber, the amount of liquid is not sufficient on a given batch. And with certain batches, I believe that not all AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX reference cards may be affected by this because, in various surveys (via Computerbase), only a quarter of users experience this issue. Igor Walusik of Igor’s lab also noted the same in his findings and was even able to quote a manufacturer who suspected that the level of liquid within a particular batch could not meet specifications.

First feedback from the manufacturer: They suspect that too little fluid was introduced in at least one batch. Which can also explain the situational dependency. Hanging horizontally, the capacitor will no longer appear.

If this is indeed a small batch, AMD can certainly open the RMA channel and send affected users with a replacement unit (although one user refused a replacement due to low inventory quantities). This is still a serious issue that AMD has to address and now that they have some input from the community on this issue, they should start working on a solution as soon as possible.

Do you think AMD should remember the Radeon RX 7900 XTX reference cards if they really had a design flaw with the cooler?
