AMD Ryzen 7000 X3D CPUs Don’t Feature Manual Overclocking, Microsoft Brings Improvements In Windows 11

AMD’s recently announced Ryzen 7000 X3D Zen 4 3D V-Cache CPUs may not feature overclocking support quite like their predecessors.

In a Q&A with the press, AMD has confirmed that its Ryzen 7000 X3D 3D V-Cache CPUs will benefit from more advanced tuning features such as PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) and Curve Optimizer, but it appears that manual overclocking or any voltage adjustments are still List. out of the question.

AMD recommends users to go with Curve Optimizer as it offers the best balance of overall CPU performance but harsh overclocking is locked out just like the previous generation Zen 3D V-Cache chips. According to the red team, the voltages are a bit more aggressive this time around, rising to 1.4V versus the 1.1V limit on the Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU. The stacked L3 cache on the chip is very sensitive to high temperatures and extra voltage and it is possible for the chips to break if modified, so there is a solid lock just like the previous generation. So AMD Ryzen 7000 X3D CPUs have something to do with the limited effort they have to take advantage of PBO and Curve Optimizer.

Last year when AMD launched the Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU, former head of technical marketing Robert Hallock stated that they were quick to get the Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU into the gaming market, so it’s likely that given enough time to mature, AMD could have Future generations of 3D V-Cache chips that support overclocking just like any other CPU. AMD has now definitely improved on its first-gen designs, offering more auto-tuning options and higher clock speeds to work with but for full manual overclocking it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit more.

There have also been some reports that the overclocking lock has been bypassed by a few overclocking pros and we know for sure that a few motherboard vendors were working on a BIOS for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D to enable overclocking support but that didn’t Succeed and hit AMD hard with limitations that mean those plans must go down the drain.

AMD and Microsoft to Optimize Windows 11 for Hybrid Chip Architecture Designs

In addition, Microsoft and AMD are also improving the Ryzen 7000 X3D’s dual CCD configurations under Windows 11. This is the first time that AMD has released a CPU with two completely different cubs. One CCD will be configured with a 3D cache (plus lower clocks) while the other will be configured with a non-standard V-Cache die but running at faster clocks (up to 5.7GHz). This is also the first time that boost clocks are rated as high as non-3D parts, but it remains to be seen how Windows 11 improves workloads and usage across these CCDs as games will clearly benefit from 3D V-Cache die while loads will benefit Single-threaded work over non-3D molding.

The improvements will come through AMD’s proprietary chipset drivers that will choose from a selection of games that take advantage of the increased V-Cache solution. This is a process that takes time to mature, so we will likely see improvements months after the release of the Ryzen 7000 X3D CPUs.
